Corporates executives leaving their cushy jobs and pursuing creative talents and turning entrepreneurs has taken precedence and one such talent who has been carving his own space and niche in the world of media and entertainment is Chetan Bhagat. Working as an investment banker for more than a decade Chetan’s creative leanings took shape and he quit the corporate world, returned to India in 2009 to pursue his writing talents. Since then Chetan has written a number of novels based on youth, education and the country at large. The New York Times has tagged him as the biggest selling English language novelist in India’s history.
Chetan Bhagat is a game changer in the country’s literary scene and is now counted amongst a handful of youth icons who have accomplished much on their own steam.
His books have found a visual spin in Bollywood and three of Chetan’s books have influenced successful movies, one was the blockbuster ’3 Idiots’ that starred Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi, second was ’Hello’ which starred Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Gul Panag and Sharman Joshi and the third being Kai Po Che last year which received much critical acclaim and commercial success.
Chetan Bhagat is no ordinary writer considering the fact that his stories evoke the readers to contemplate and ponder on social issues that make the diaspora of a country like India so interesting and challenging to the youth all over. This dynamic and talented Author has also been honored by Time magazine by being listed among the 100 Most Influential People in the World.
His charisma has also taken him in the direction of being a motivational speaker at reputed corporate events and seminars and he is definitely someone who echoes the voice of modern, young and not so young and restless India. Recently Chetan was invited to Singapore for the Indian Festival of Art held in November 2013 where he shared his inspirations and aspirations publicly. He was part of the education forum that was organized by NDTV where he espouses on India’s dire need to make education a priority once again. As an advocate of the girl child’s education he makes sure he supports causes like Akanksha (NGO) in this direction thus walking the talk.
He was also part of the Shaadi.com ad film that marked his career in the modeling/advertising scenario. Brands like Huawei India have engaged Chetan Bhagat as their ambassador to launch their tablets and phones, movie producers vy for his attention, and Chetan also has his own commercial line of T-shirts with witty and intelligent one-liners, which is taken from all his novels written so far. As a blogger Chetan writes about current social affairs and he has massive following that largely comprise of the nation’s youth. This goes to prove that Chetan indeed made the right move pursuing his talents. In all this, his greatest icon and motivating factor has been Steve Jobs the late co-founder of Apple and this keeps him endeavouring, instilling magic in his words when he writes.
Whilst his latest novel ’Revolution 2020’ has just hit the stands and is already being adapted by UTV for a movie script, Chetan is someone who does not rest on his laurels.
He has never hesitated to voice his opinions on the state of Indian politics and politicos and is someone who is spearheading change in his own way through his talent for the written word. It is this passion that has now made him come forth and anchor a poignant TV series ’7 RCR’ which went live over the weekend on ABP news channel. The series will depict the journey of all those who are in the fray to reach 7 Race Course Road which is the PM’s official residence. Which means for the layman- the one who becomes the next PM of India.
This series is in sync with the forthcoming General elections that will decide the economic, political fate of the country and Chetan is all set to make sure this series is reflective through dramatic reconstructions and visual language employed through cinematography. Through Chetan Bhagat’s inimitable style of voicing strong opinions the new TV series aims to bring awareness about the political leaders to Indians all over.
Talk of Talent tying in with politics in a creative depictment. This is surely a first and we await with bated breath as to the fate of this TV series and Chetan’s role as Anchor; never mind the fate of Indian politicos in the fray to ’7 RCR’!
